🏁 Wheel Quality Alert – Limited Legacy Stock Remaining
What’s Happening
Derby Dust® currently has about 200 sets of pre-2025/26 production wheels left in inventory. These are the final remaining sets manufactured before the most recent mold changes.
In August 2025, we ordered 2,000 sets of wheels from the latest production run—unfortunately, we had to return every single set due to severe quality issues. After more than a decade of working with these products, this is the poorest quality run we’ve seen.
What’s Wrong with the Latest Production
The defects in the 2025 wheels are significant and not fixable by any normal tuning or machining process:

Bores too small – Some wheels can’t even accept the included axles.

Heavy flashing – Excess plastic along the edges adds drag and imbalance.

Mold-release residue – A visible film baked into the surface, affecting polish and performance.

Out-of-center bores – Major runout issues that cause wobble at speed.
These problems aren’t cosmetic. They affect both performance and fairness—and no amount of machining or alignment work can correct these defects.
What This Means for Builders
Once our stock of pre-2025/26 wheels is gone, good wheels will be extremely difficult to find if they can be found at all until the mold issues are corrected at the manufacturer level.
If history is any guide, this could take 2 racing seasons to stabilize. The last major defect cycle (2018) wasn’t fully corrected until around 2020.
We’ll continue to supply verified legacy wheels while they last. When that stock is gone, we’ll post another update here and on our store banner.
Why This Matters
Wheel quality is at the heart of Pinewood-style racing. Precision and balance can make or break performance. If every racer is forced to use defective molds, it levels the field in the worst possible way—with slower, inconsistent cars and frustrated builders.
As a small business, we can’t fix this upstream problem alone—but together, the racing community can demand better.
