Pinewood Derby Slab Block
The basic starting point of all Pinewood cars is the body that, by the nature of the race, is made from pine. This Pinewood derby slab block Rough Cut is what is left after we re-saw our cnc laser bodies out of a full pinewood derby block. What is left over is about 3/8" of an inch slab block. It's great for those that like to build their own stuff. Ready for planing, shouldn't take but a couple of small passes on each side for a nice 1/4" wafer. It is re-sawed on both sizes. So at least one side will need to be planned prior to drilling or slotting.
Last year I saved all derby blocks, planned them, and then used them for Amazon stock. This year I was able to order 2 pallets of wood blocks from Woodgrain Millwork, Inc. (the same company that makes blocks for BSA). I have almost unlimited supply of blocks now. This year I threw away about 4000 of these slabs simply because it takes too much time for me to plane them. Bill from Derby Worx gave me some great advice, and now we are offering these slabs at a great price point.
This rough cut slab block is around 3/8″ thick. When trimmed down to 1/4" thickness, a thin body creates an extremely aerodynamic car and thus allows you to place the majority of the car's weight exactly where you need it in order to optimize the placement of the center of gravity. This means more speed.
These Slab blocks meet all BSA Pinewood Derby dimensional requirements:
7″ long
1¾″ wide
3/8″ thick.
Drill axle holes with the
Pro Body Tool or slot it with the Pro Body Slotter.
