Pinewood Derby Wheels by Derby Dust

To the new to novice builder there can be great confusion in wheel choice. What does all this technical info mean? What does my Pack allows? There is no blanket BSA rule that cover all wheels. Each local PACK determines what wheels can and cannot be used.

Below is a run through of each wheel we offer with the as much info as we can provide. We will place them in order from slowest to fastest. Mostly this will be based on wheel weight. The lighter the wheel, the faster the car. Proven concept, not mathematical.

All measurements are averages and may not be actual per your specific wheel.

OD-Outer Diameter

AWW- Average Wheel Weight.

MM-Mold Match — Some believe that if wheels come form same mold, they will be the same wheel. We know that each wheel is different regardless what mold it comes from. Be careful as the mathematical likelihood that you will get all 4 wheels out of box to match is stupid high.

MIB- Matched Inner Bore +/- 0.0005″ We measure out wheels to determine which wheels have the same inner diameter. A much more scientific version of the “mold match” theory.

Factory Wheel

OD: 1.180″ Full Bead/Tread
AWW: 2.61 grams

This wheel is straight from the factory. No additional work done to it. It will have mold marks. The new wheel process does not have seams. Full bead and tread. Will meet all BSA race requirements. MM,MIB available

Factory Wheel – Reamed

OD: 1.180″ Full Bead/Tread
AWW: 2.60 grams
Outer Hub: Factory
Inner Wheel Edge: Factory 0.360″
Inner Wheel Hub: Factory
Inner Hub Bore: Reamed to 0.0960″

This wheel is straight from the factory. It will have mold marks. The new wheel process does not have seams. Full bead and tread. The inner bore has been reamed to machine any manufacturing flaws. Will meet all BSA race requirements. MM,MIB available

Factory Wheel Wet Sanded

OD: 1.179″ Full Bead/Tread
AWW: 2.58 grams
Outer Hub: Factory
Inner Wheel Edge: Factory 0.360″
Inner Wheel Hub: Factory
Inner Hub Bore: Reamed to 0.0960″

This wheel is straight from the factory. Any mold marks have been removed. It will have a scratched looking wheel surface. 99.9% Full bead and tread. The inner bore has been reamed to machine any manufacturing flaws. Will meet 99.9% BSA race requirements. MM,MIB available

Derby Dust ® Lightly Machined Wheels

OD: 1.174″ Bead/Tread present
AWW: 2.51 grams

Inner Wheel Edge: Factory 0.360″
Inner Wheel Hub: Factory
Inner Hub Bore: Reamed to 0.0960″

This wheels has had the outer diameter reduced by .006″. It will have bead/tread present. Inner bore has been reamed to remove any manufacturing flaws. Meet Most pack requirements. However it will not meet the 1.180″ outer diameter requirement. All BSA lettering in tact. MM available.

Derby Dust ® Asset Machined Wheels

OD: 1.174″ Bead/Tread present
AWW: 2.56 grams
Outer Hub: 2 Step, concave head (allows reduced wheel gap)
Inner Wheel Edge: Factory
Inner Wheel Hub: Factory
Inner Hub Bore: Flawless Bores

This wheels has had the outer diameter reduced by .006″. It will have bead/tread present. Flawless Inner bores. The wheels have been sorted for any manufacturing flaws. Meet Most pack requirements. However it will not meet the 1.180″ outer diameter requirement. All BSA lettering in tact.MM, MIB available.

Derby Dust ® 2.05gram

This wheel has had the outer diameter reduced. It will have bead/tread present. Inner bores have been reamed, and polished according to manufacturers specs. Mold Match only. Inner portion of the wheel edge and hub have been trued. All BSA lettering in tact. Inner portion of wheel has been milled to remove weight.
